2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition: Subaru wants you to climb the Rockies!

After the legendary Outback, it's now the Forester turn to get the Wilderness treatment, as confirmed by a leak from the EPA Fuel Rating. Even if the regular Forester is already a competent vehicle, the Wilderness Edition will make it a better offroader with many upgrades that should be very similar to what is offering the Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition.

Earlier this month, Subaru announced there would be a second model Wilderness Edition and up until very recently, we didn't know which one it was going to be even if we had a good idea. I mean, apart from the BR-Z, pretty much any car in the Subaru lineup is good at offroading, and this makes us think the Outback and the Forester probably won't be the only Subaru to get this upgrade. We won't be surprised if all the Subaru lineup models get their Wilderness Edition.

No Upgrade Under the hood

The EPA leak answered one of the most asked questions about the Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition, which would be under the hood. At 1st, people thought it would be the same 2.4 L turbocharged four-cylinders offered by the Subaru Outback, but it's not the case. Subaru stayed with the same engine that is already available for the regular Forester. We then talk about a naturally aspirated 2.5 L four banger. This engine produces a power of 182 hp and 176 foot-pounds of torque. Let me tell you that it's more than enough power for a vehicle of this size. However, I think the Subaru Forester could be fun to drive with the Subaru Outback mechanic because it makes about 260 hp and 277 foot-pounds of torque.

Since the leak came from the EPA Fuel Rating tests, we know the official fuel consumption of the 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition and since we are nice enough to share it with you. EPA results are more than satisfying, with an average of 9.0L/100 km. Of course, we accepted the Wilderness Edition to be a little harder on gas than the regular version because of the big tires and the beefed-up suspension, but 0.9L/100 km more than the regular Forester is not bad.

What can we expect?

We don't know much about the Forester Wilderness Edition, except it is the next big thing in the Subaru lineup. However, we can imagine its equipment will be very similar to what you can find in the Outback Wilderness. So, we are talking about off-road Yokohama Geolandr tire, 17 inches unique wheels, and a roof rack that can support up to 700 pounds which is a lot.

There is no official release date for the 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition for now, but we are sure it's coming soon.

The Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester has been introduced to the market in 1997 and quickly gain the heart of people. It was a convenient and competent vehicle even back then. Without any surprises, it was sharing its platform with the Impreza, which allowed the Japanese manufacturer to produce an STI version for specific markets. Unfortunately, this version wasn't available in North America, but many have been imported from Japan since then.

The second generation came in 2002 and was slightly more significant than the previous model with a few better things. This generation was prevalent in other countries like Australia because of its natural talent for offroading. This generation also featured many new techs that made the Forester one of the most advanced vehicles of its category in the 2000s.

The 3rd generation was there for only four years, but it's still one of the most appreciated Forester ever. The fourth generation hit the market in 2012, and again, Subaru offered a lot of upgrades to make it better than the previous model. Finally, this brings us to the current generation that has been out since 2018. Depending on your choice's model, you're going to have one of the three levels of the all-wheel-drive system that Subaru is offering. The Sports version is by far the most interesting with the most advanced all-wheel-drive system of them all. This one benefits from the Dual Function X-Mode, which is perfect for any lousy combination of weather like snow and dirt or snow and mud. I think it's safe to say that we expect this advanced all-wheel-drive system to be featured on the 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition that I am very impatient to get my hands on for a test drive outside the road. Hopefully, the Forester Wilderness Edition should be revealed in the next few weeks if everything goes well.
